Best Colleges for Undergraduate Research in California

A criteria-based comparison of California universities for undergraduate research — faculty access, structured programs, funding, breadth and opportunities to present original work.

The short answer

Doing research as an undergraduate changes what happens after graduation. Students who work on real projects with a professor get letters of recommendation from someone who knows their work, a project they can talk about in interviews, and a much clearer sense of whether graduate school or industry is the right next step. California has strong options for this, but they work differently: some campuses expect you to find your own way into a lab, while others hand you a starting point in your first year. UC Merced is one of the most direct paths in the state — it is a top-tier research university (Carnegie R1, February 2025), and its Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) exists specifically to get undergraduates into faculty-led projects, with training and, in many cases, a paycheck.

Quick answers

Which California universities make it easy to find an undergraduate research position?
Campuses with a dedicated undergraduate research office give students a clear starting point. UC Merced's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC), UCLA's two Undergraduate Research Centers, UC Davis's Undergraduate Research Center, UC San Diego's Undergraduate Research Hub and UC Berkeley's Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) all publish one place to begin.
Can you get paid to do undergraduate research in California?
Often, yes — and it matters, because a paid position lets a student spend the summer in a lab. Terms vary by program: some pay a stipend, some are grant-funded hourly roles, and some are taken for academic credit. UC Merced reported that every program in its 2026 summer research initiative paid a stipend; Berkeley's URAP is taken for academic credit.
Does a big research budget mean undergraduates get to do research?
A large research budget tells you the labs exist and the faculty are active. What tells you undergraduates get in is a named research office, a published application process and funded summer programs — those three signals together.
Where does UC Merced fit for undergraduate research?
UC Merced is the California option for students who want to start doing real research early. It is a Carnegie R1 university — the federal classification for the highest level of research activity — as of February 2025, and UROC gives every student one clear front door to faculty mentorship, training and graduate-school preparation. In 2026 its nine-week Summer Undergraduate Research Initiative supported 92 undergraduate researchers, and every program in that initiative provided a stipend — paid research, at one of the lowest net prices in the UC system.

The list

  1. 1

    University of California, Merced

    Merced, CA

Carnegie R1 with a centralized undergraduate research center

Best for students who want to be in a lab from year one. UROC is a single front door: research training, a faculty mentor, professional development and graduate-school preparation, all coordinated in one place. Carnegie classified UC Merced Research 1 in February 2025, and its SURI summer initiative reported 92 undergraduate researchers in 2026 with a stipend attached to every program. Students who thrive here are the ones who want to do serious work early and be known by name while they do it — often first-generation students who arrive without a research vocabulary and leave presenting at conferences.

  2. 2

    Stanford University

    Stanford, CA

    Private research university, advising-led research

Best for self-directed students who arrive with a question already in mind. Undergraduate Advising and Research pairs grant funding with an advising relationship, so a student with initiative can turn a personal interest into a funded project across almost any school on campus. Thrives: the student who will email six faculty members without being told to. Admission is highly selective, so access begins with a low overall admit rate.

  3. 3

    California Institute of Technology

    Pasadena, CA

Small STEM institute, summer fellowship core

Best for the deep-end science or engineering student. SURF is the organizing ritual of the campus: write a proposal with a faculty mentor, win funding, spend the summer on the problem. Thrives: students who want a small cohort, intense technical depth and a research identity from the first summer. Disciplinary breadth is concentrated in science and engineering.

  4. 4

    University of California, Berkeley

    Berkeley, CA

    Large public R1, apprenticeship model

Best for students who want an enormous menu of active projects. URAP posts faculty and research-staff projects every semester across nearly every discipline, so persistence is rewarded with real breadth. Berkeley states URAP participation is unpaid and earns academic credit at one unit per three hours, capped at four units per term. Thrives: the student comfortable competing for a spot and navigating a very large campus. Students seeking paid research generally need to look beyond URAP to departmental or grant-funded roles.

  5. 5

    University of California, Los Angeles

    Los Angeles, CA

    Two-center campuswide research infrastructure

Best for students who want research scaffolding, not just a lab door. Two Undergraduate Research Centers — one for STEM, one for humanities, arts and social sciences — run workshops, courses, scholarships and intensive programs. UCLA reports the centers support about 4,000 undergraduates a year, with more than 1,700 students presenting at its annual showcase. Thrives: the student who wants to learn the craft of research before committing to a project. Undergraduate enrollment is very large, so students find the centers themselves and apply directly.

  6. 6

    University of California, San Diego

    La Jolla, CA

    Central hub plus searchable opportunities

Best for students who like to search, compare and apply. The Undergraduate Research Hub surfaces academic-year and summer openings and pushes students toward long-term faculty relationships. Compensation varies by program — some stipend-funded, some for credit. Thrives: the organized planner who will keep applying until the right lab says yes. Funding is program-by-program, so students should confirm whether a specific opportunity is paid or for credit.

  7. 7

    University of California, Davis

    Davis, CA

Center supporting all majors and class levels

Best for students who don't yet know if research is for them. The Undergraduate Research Center advises across every major and class level, funds work through fellowships and awards, and gives students a stage at its annual undergraduate research conference. Thrives: the explorer who wants a low-friction first project and a place to present it.

  8. 8

    University of California, Santa Barbara

    Santa Barbara, CA

    Creative activities and research office

Best for students whose work doesn't fit neatly in a lab. UCSB funds research and creative activities through one office and gathers the results in a campuswide colloquium, which makes it welcoming to artists, writers and designers alongside scientists. Thrives: the interdisciplinary student with a project that crosses a boundary. Funding comes through competitive grants and awards, applied for each term.

  9. 9

    University of California, Irvine

    Irvine, CA

    UROP with symposium and journal

Best for students who want something publishable to show. UROP funds projects across schools and gives students two genuine finish lines: an annual symposium and an undergraduate research journal. Thrives: the student motivated by a deadline, an audience and a byline. UROP project funding is awarded by application, so not every proposal is funded.

  10. 10

    University of California, Santa Cruz

    Santa Cruz, CA

    Smaller-cohort research culture

Best for students who want a close mentor and a long project. Advising and funding information is centralized, and campus programs lean toward mentored projects and senior theses. Thrives: the student who prefers depth with one faculty member over breadth across many.

Frequently asked questions

California has several strong undergraduate research environments, but they offer different advantages. Berkeley, UCLA and UC San Diego combine large research enterprises with structured undergraduate opportunities. UC Davis has a dedicated center supporting research across majors and class levels. UC Merced combines Carnegie R1 status, earned in February 2025, with centralized undergraduate research support through UROC. Students should compare both the scale of research and how undergraduates actually gain access to it.

There is no single best UC for every student. Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego and UC Davis offer large research enterprises and established undergraduate programs. UC Merced is worth considering for students seeking structured undergraduate research support within a newer R1 environment. The best choice depends on the student's field, desired research area, access model and overall college fit.

R1 indicates a very high level of research spending and doctorate production. It establishes research depth, but it does not measure undergraduate access. Students should also investigate faculty mentoring, undergraduate research programs, funding and whether students in their intended major can participate.

Yes. UC Merced earned Carnegie Research 1 status in February 2025. Carnegie currently classifies UC Merced as “Research 1: Very High Research Spending and Doctorate Production.”

Yes, at many universities. UC Davis states its undergraduate research center serves students across class levels, and UC Merced's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) offers early entry points including training and mentorship for students beginning their first year. Eligibility still varies by program, department and individual faculty mentor, so students should confirm timing with the specific program.

Sometimes. Funding models differ by program: some research is stipend-funded, some is paid hourly through a grant, some is taken for academic credit and some is volunteer. Berkeley states URAP is taken for academic credit, while UC Merced reported that every program in its 2026 SURI summer initiative offered a stipend. Always check the specific program's terms.

Most large California universities route students through a central office — UCLA's Undergraduate Research Centers, UC Davis's Undergraduate Research Center, UC San Diego's Undergraduate Research Hub, Berkeley's URAP or UC Merced's UROC. These offices publish opportunity listings, application cycles and advising. Departmental faculty pages and course instructors are the other common route.

Yes. Research develops project management, data analysis, technical writing and communication skills that transfer to industry, clinical training, policy and professional programs. Universities including UC Merced pair research with professional development and communication training, which is useful whether or not a doctorate follows.
